I first heard about this bad boy from my ex boss Amber. Amber is from Texas originally and is an all round appreciator of good food. Her enthusiasm for food earned her some funny looks in the office. But I loved how descriptive she was about receipes and cooking, she made a birthday cake for every single person on their birthday, baked from scratch and all different; Amber, this is for you!
No one is quite sure where the name came from. Originally called a French sandwich, the Monte Cristo was renamed in Southern California in the 1950s, possibly as a nod to the French adventure novel and film The Count of Monte Cristo. The Monte Cristo hit the big time in 1966, when it was featured on the menu at the Disneyland’s Blue Bayou restaurant.
The Monte Cristo Sandwich is on my list of things to make.
Ingredients:
2 slices bread
mustard to taste
3 slices deli ham (or turkey)
1 slice gruyere cheese
1 egg
1 tablespoon milk
a touch cinnamon
1/2 teaspoon vanilla
1 teaspoon butter
1 teaspoon icing sugar
1 tablespoon strawberry jam
Directions:
1. Spread mustard on a slice of bread and construct the sandwich with the ham and cheese.
2. Mix the egg, milk, cinnamon and vanilla in a shallow pan.
3. Dip the sandwich into the egg mixture and cover both sides with it.
4. Melt the butter in a pan.
5. Fry both sides of the sandwich in the pan until golden brown and the cheese has melted.
6. Sprinkle the icing sugar onto the sandwich by placing it in a fine sieve and banging it over the sandwich.
I found the receipe here amazing!!!
